When we come to install a shower, we do not begin immediately. Usually we stand there for a moment, looking at the pipe and the wall. Every bathroom has its own history. Some were renovated recently, some have fittings older than the flat itself. You can tell by the colour around the joint, or the way the pipe shifts when you touch it. These things guide how gently we must work.

Taking off the old shower is not difficult, but it needs a kind of quiet attention. If the fitting has been overtightened in the past, it will resist. If it has been loose for too long, the thread inside may already be worn. We turn it slowly, without forcing. When it releases, there is a small relief you can feel in the hand. After that, we clean the thread. A bit of dust, a bit of old tape, sometimes moisture trapped behind — all removed by hand. It is almost like wiping a mirror before you hang it.

The new shower head is fitted next. Different models have different weights, and the pipe reacts differently to each one. We try to find the angle that feels natural, where the head does not strain the arm. When the water is turned on, the first spray tells us whether we have judged correctly. Sometimes the flow is too strong on one side, or too weak in the centre, and we make small adjustments until the pattern settles.

When the work is done, we let the water run for a short while. It is not part of any rule, but it helps us feel that everything has settled into place. A new shower, when properly installed, does not call attention to itself. It simply works, quietly, day after day.
